First Time Filing ITR? Complete Beginner's Guide
TL;DR: You need your PAN, Form 16 (from employer), and bank details. Most salaried people file ITR-1. The whole process takes 5 minutes with TaxZen (free). No tax knowledge needed.
Do You Need to File ITR?
You must file ITR if any of these apply:
- Your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit (₹3L for new regime, ₹2.5L for old regime)
- You want to claim a tax refund (TDS deducted was more than your actual tax)
- You have foreign assets or income
- You're applying for a loan or visa (banks/embassies ask for ITR receipts)
- Your TDS/TCS during the year exceeded ₹25,000
Even if you owe zero tax, filing ITR is a good habit. It creates a financial record, helps with loan applications, and lets you claim refunds.
What You Need (Documents)
- PAN card — Your 10-character Permanent Account Number
- Aadhaar number — Linked to PAN (mandatory for e-filing)
- Form 16 — Your employer gives this by June 15. It shows your salary, TDS deducted, and deductions.
- Bank account details — IFSC code and account number (for refund credit)
- Interest certificates — From bank if you earned savings account or FD interest
Which ITR Form?
| Your Situation | ITR Form |
|---|---|
| Salaried, income ≤ ₹50L, no stocks/crypto | ITR-1 (simplest) |
| Salaried with stock/mutual fund gains or crypto | ITR-2 |
| Freelancer / side business | ITR-4 |

Common First-Timer Mistakes
- ❌ Not filing because "my employer already deducted TDS" — you still need to file ITR
- ❌ Missing the July 31 deadline — late fee of ₹5,000 applies
- ❌ Not reporting bank interest — savings account interest above ₹10,000 is taxable
- ❌ Choosing wrong ITR form — if you have stock gains, you need ITR-2, not ITR-1
- ❌ Not e-verifying — your ITR is incomplete until you e-verify (Aadhaar OTP is easiest)
